Budgie Cage Setup: Everything Your Parakeet Needs

A budgie spends most of its life in its cage, so setup matters more than almost anything else you buy. The good news: a great setup isn't expensive, just thoughtful.

Start with size. Wider beats taller, because budgies fly side to side. The bar spacing should be narrow enough that your bird can't squeeze through — about half an inch. Then the essentials: perches of different thicknesses (dowels cause foot problems), a cuttlebone, a couple of toys, and food and water bowls placed away from perches so they don't get soiled.

Placement matters too. Put the cage against a wall, out of drafts, and at about chest height. Cover it at night to give your budgie a full 10 to 12 hours of darkness — budgies need their sleep.

Browse cages and aviaries and size up, not down. A budgie with room to move is a happier, healthier bird.

Quick Q&A

How big should a budgie cage be? At least 18 inches wide for one bird — bigger if you can, and always wider than tall.

Do budgies need toys? Yes. They're playful and intelligent; rotate toys weekly to prevent boredom.

Where should I put the cage? In a room where people spend time, against a wall, away from drafts and kitchen fumes.
