How to Tell If Your Dog Has Fleas

By the time you see a flea jump, the problem is usually well underway. Fleas spend most of their lives off the dog, so spotting them early takes a little detective work.

The clearest sign is flea dirt — tiny black specks in your dog's coat, especially at the base of the tail and on the belly. Wipe the specks with a damp paper towel; if they turn reddish-brown, it's digested blood, which means fleas. Other signs: constant scratching or biting, red or irritated skin, and hair loss in patches.

A flea comb through the coat is the fastest test. Comb the fur against the grain and check the teeth for live fleas or black specks.

Found fleas? Start treatment fast, and wash your dog's bedding in hot water — because for every flea you see, there are dozens of eggs nearby.
